Do you have black smut coming off the seed heads of your Bermuda?

If you are a homeowner or managing someone else’s Bermuda grass lawn in West Tennessee, then you could possibly be dealing with distorted Bermuda seed heads that turn black and can leave a mess on your shoes, socks, or even on your pets just to have them track the smut spores inside your home.  All types of Bermuda are susceptible to this systemic fungal pathogen that generally shows up this time of the year as our warm season grasses begin to thrive. Usually wet weather in late spring and early summer will encourage Stripe Smut ( bermuda inflorescence smut) to invade your more susceptible Bermuda grass lawns.

This disease is better known as Stripe Smut to most homeowners and lawn care providers in the West Tennessee area and has been identified in Dyer, Lake, Obion, Madison, and Gibson counties in 2015.

So what can you do about the Stripe Smut fungus? Unfortunately, there is not an easy answer to control this disease on your Bermuda grass lawn.

Improving drainage and increasing ventilation or air flow can help. Excess moisture areas provide a great environment for Stripe Smut.

Applying a fungicide to prevent this disease from getting worse and getting some control is a viable option but they are not a definite cure of this fungus.

Applying high rates of nitrogen has been known to help the plant grow out of this frustrating fungus as well.

Frequent mowing seems to help this disease not be as noticeable and messy and therefore solving the problem for at least a short time anyway.

As summer temperatures approach this disease will be less noticeable and should eventually give you temporary relief.

Stripe Smut disease can be very frustrating for many people. Consulting a professional to identify and try to find the most cost effective approach could save you many steps, heartaches, and money. Taking the tips above and implementing as much of them as possible is the best approach of ridding your lawn of this disease.
